Botanical name: Moringa oleifera

Origin: North-west India; Naturalized in Kenya

Known to some as a superfood or the miraculous tree, Moringa, is a deciduous tree that typically reaches heights of up to 10 meters, adorned with pale feathery foliage and gracefully drooping branches. Its grey, thick, corky bark peels in patches, adding to its unique aesthetic. The leaves, pale green and thrice compound, are characterized by oval leaflets with rounded tips, each spanning 30-60 cm. Adorned with cream flowers that fade to yellow, this tree boasts long sprays, emitting a sweet scent that attracts insects. Its fruit, long capsules reaching up to 45 cm, splits when dry to release 9 dark brown 3-winged seeds.

Uses: Moringa is known for its edible leaves and fruit capsules, which can be prepared as a vegetable, to its medicinal properties found in the oil extracted from its seeds and roots. It serves as valuable fodder for livestock, bee forage, and provides shade and windbreak. Additionally, its fiber, tannin, and live fence properties make it a valuable asset. Extracted Ben oil finds application in various industrial uses, while the powder from its seeds aids in water purification. Its roots can be used as a spice, serving as a substitute for horseradish or mustard.

Notes: The Moringa is cherished for its culinary and medicinal properties, with its leaves commonly used as a vegetable among the Mijikenda community. The young capsules, known as drumsticks, are a delicacy in the Asian community. Immature seeds can be utilized similarly to green peas. Often cultivated as a living fence in coastal homesteads, its wood, albeit soft, serves multiple purposes. However, caution is advised when using the root bark due to its poisonous alkaloids, which can cause dizziness (known as kisuzi among the Mijikenda).
