Standard/ Trade name: Forest Milkberry

Manilkara discolor is an evergreen, medium to large tree with milky sap. Its leaves are obovate-oblong, dark green above, and covered in silvery-white velvety hairs below, with creamy-yellow flowers in small axillary clusters. The fruit is ovoid or ellipsoid, up to 1.3 cm long, green turning yellow when ripe. This dry forest tree, typically found near rivers, reaches up to 20 m in height with grey bark. Its clustered leaves and yellow flowers are characteristic, and it’s native to various parts of Kenya, including the coastal hinterlands.

Ripe fruits, known as ‘marafa,’ are edible and sweet, enjoyed by both humans and elephants. The wood, hard and versatile, is utilized in construction, fuel, tools, carvings, utensils (wooden spoons), bee forage and shade.
