Local Loquat

Eriobotrya japonica

Origin: Indigenous

The Local Loquat is a versatile evergreen plant, reaching heights of up to 7 m. Its bark is characterized by a rough, grey texture, while its leaves, dark green and shiny on top, feature woolly hairs below, growing up to 53 cm long with pointed tips and prickly, toothed edges. The cream-white, scented flowers form pyramidal heads at branch ends, each about 2cm across with golden-brown haired buds. Its yellow, egg-shaped fruits, typically 2-7 cm long, are clustered and contain acid-sweet flesh around large brown-black seeds.

This plant serves various purposes including firewood, charcoal, food (edible fruit, jam, jelly, syrup), bee forage, shade, ornamental use, mulch, and windbreak. It’s worth noting that while the fruit is juicy and sweet-acidic, caution should be exercised as the seeds are reportedly poisonous.
