Standard/Trade name: East African bombax.
The EA bombax is a huge and tall tree of 36m with a straight bole and medium crown. The bark is yellow-green and smooth. It has compound leaves with 3-7 leaflets that are around 4cm long and shaped like hand fingers. Produces 5 petals, pale pink, about 6 x 3 cm, with a dark red-brown fluffy kapok centre.
Uses: Timber (soft), carving, boat building (canoes), drums, edible seed, medicine (bark and leaves), shade, ornamental, avenue tree, river-bank stabilisation, fibre (bark), dye (bark), boundary marking, stuffing pillows and mattresses and hollows cut in the trunk for storing dry food and honey.
Notes: A good food tree for coastal locations. A red-brown dye is extracted from the bark. The seeds can be roasted and consumed as groundnuts. Roasted seeds can be ground into a powder and used to cook with vegetables or meat. Apparently, they provide an excellent source of wood for making coffins.
