Botanical name: Prunus africana
Also known in Swahili Kiburubura.
A tree native to the Nyandarua Ranges (named Aberdare Ranges by the British), the Prunus Africana or African prune, also known as Muiri in Kikuyu, has been “discovered” to cure a host of diseases including prostate cancer. Also refered to as Red stinkwood.
The crushed leaves and strong dark red wood formally used to make furniture, have a bitter almond smell. Valuable medicinal properties. Fruit is poisonous.
The tree is becoming rare in the wild, although now a favourite in agroforestry and afforestation campaigns.
Its products can only be traded under licence for export.
