Nandi Flame

Spathodea campanulata (S. nilotica)

Origin: Indigenous

The Nandi Flame, also known as Spathodea campanulata or S. nilotica, is a deciduous tree native to the region. It typically reaches heights of 10-15 meters with a rounded crown. The bark is pale grey-brown, initially smooth but roughening with age. Its compound leaves can grow up to 40 cm long, comprising six pairs of leaflets and a central leaflet, each with a wavy shape and pointed tip. The tree produces striking bright orange-red flower clusters with a yellow edge on the frilly petals, and a yellow-flowering variety also exists. Furry buds contain watery liquid, while the fruit consists of large woody capsules up to 25 cm in length, splitting open on the ground to release numerous flat-winged seeds.

Uses: The Nandi Flame serves various purposes including as firewood, charcoal, carving material, and medicinal applications using bark, flowers, and roots. It also provides bee forage, shade, ornamental beauty, serves as an avenue tree, mulch, and functions as a windbreak.

Notes: Not preferred by domestic animals for browsing. According to Luo beliefs, it’s advised not to plant this species in the homestead.
