Origin: Southern Africa; naturalized in Kenya

Description: A thorny evergreen shrub, usually 3-5 m. This species is commonly used in Kenya to make excellent impenetrable hedges/fence. Its bark has strong spines to 6 cm with thin, shiny dark green leaves to 5 cm, tip rounded or notched. The Kei apple has male and female flowers on different plants, male flowers cream-yellow in dense clusters, many stamens. Their fruit are round, orange-yellow, up to 4cm, soft sweet flesh, up to 20 seeds within.

Uses: Fruit, jam, bee forage, ornamental, live fence.

Remarks: A popular species for live fencing. Many Dovyalis species have edible fruit but they are often very acid in taste.
