Guava

Psidium guajava

Originating from South and Central America, guava is now naturalized in Kenya. This versatile evergreen tree grows up to 8m tall with smooth, pale brown bark that later peels and flakes. Its large, oval leaves grow in opposite pairs, with prominently hairy veins below. White flowers, about 2.5 cm across, bloom in clusters beside the leaves, followed by rounded fruits up to 6 cm long. The sweet flesh surrounds many hard angular seeds.

Guava serves various purposes including firewood, tool handles, and edible fruit rich in vitamin C. It can be used for making jam, jelly, and drinks like juice and tea from its bark. Guava also has medicinal properties and serves as fodder for animals like goats and camels. Additionally, it attracts bees, serves ornamental purposes, provides shade, aids in soil conservation, and can be used as a dye or live fence material.

Notes: Guava trees typically start bearing fruit after 2 years and can continue fruiting for up to 30 years. Improved varieties with larger and higher-quality fruits exist. The wood of the guava tree is resistant to termites. However, it can be competitive and requires pruning of branches and roots if grown with other crops. The Psidium genus, with approximately 10 members, is native to tropical America. In Kenya, several other Psidium species with smaller fruits are also cultivated.
