Botanical name: Eucalyptus grandis x E. camaldulensis 581

As the name suggests, Eucalyptus grandis × E. camaldulensis 581 is a hybrid propagated from Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus camaldulensis. It is rapidly gaining popularity in Kenya due to its adaptability and high growth rate. The species thrives in various ecological zones, including highland and mid-altitude regions such as Nyanza, Western Kenya, and Laikipia. The GC 581 hybrid thrives in most sites and grows well in areas with an average annual rainfall of 800mm. It performs best at altitudes below 1,800 m.a.s.l.

This hybrid combines the rapid growth of Eucalyptus grandis with the drought resistance of E. camaldulensis, making it an excellent choice for commercial plantations. It is widely used for transmission poles, industrial wood fuel, construction wood, and pulpwood. Additionally, it is valued for furniture and fencing posts. Experts attribute its superiority to its uniform growth, self-pruning ability, and resistance to pests.

The tree is ready for firewood in just three years and for timber in ten years, reaching full maturity in approximately 7.5 years.

It can grow up to 40–50 meters tall. For optimal growth, plant during the rainy season (March–May) with a recommended spacing of 2.5 × 2.5 meters and add 30 gsm of NPK 17-17-17 per each tree seedling.

When planting, ensure that about an inch above the ‘propagation joint’ is covered with topsoil. (See gallery image for reference.)
