Common bamboo

Bambusa vulgaris

Origin: Southern China, naturalized in Kenya

Recognizable by its lemon-yellow culms with green stripes and dark green leaves, it’s among the largest of its kind. Widely cultivated, it has naturalized in various regions beyond its native habitat. Moderately loose clumps characterize B. vulgaris, devoid of thorns, with culms growing 10–20 m high and 4–10 cm thick. Culms are not straight but slightly flexuose, with nodes slightly inflated. Despite infrequent flowering and rare fruiting, propagation occurs through various means such as clump division, rhizome spreading, and stem cutting.

Uses: Has diverse uses such as for fodder, fuel, ornamental decoration, fencing material, and in construction. Additionally, it holds significance in traditional medicine and food. Notably, its extensive rhizome system contributes to its rapid spread and seemingly wild occurrence.

Noted: Bambusa vulgaris can grow to gigantic sizes and has been naturalized in Kenya and is often employed decoratively in homes with expansive lawns, adding to its allure beyond its native range. Do not plant near home as roots may damage walls and pavements.
